Behind The Scenes

Defence at 5% isn’t just a security discussion, it’s a defining economic shift.

As the UK considers expanding defence and national security spending toward ~5% of GDP, the implications go far beyond the military.

This is about industrial strategy, innovation, regional growth, and how governments prioritise resources in a more uncertain world.

Done well, it could strengthen Britain’s industrial base and long-term resilience. Done poorly, it risks crowding out investment and narrowing fiscal flexibility.

The real question isn’t whether security matters, it’s how to balance opportunity with trade-offs.

#UKEconomy #Defence #Geopolitics #IndustrialStrategy #NationalSecurity Policy Economics Innovation❤️ This Valentine’s Day, Larkspur is playing matchmaker, connecting government’s biggest loves: people, policy, and business.

Across Westminster, the signals point to something serious: stability, smart spending, global ambition, skills, infrastructure and sustainable growth. Because the strongest economies, like the strongest relationships are built on trust.

📈 No flings.
❤️ Just long-term investment.

#ValentinesDay #Investment #UKBusiness #Growth #PublicAffairsPolitics has entered its podcast era and that matters for influence. 🎧

At the Political Podcast Awards, hosted by iNHouse Communications and attended by our CEO Ralitsa Vasilovska, one thing became strikingly clear:

You’re now more likely to hear political opponents having a civil, informed conversation in a podcast than on live television.

Where else do you get:
🎙️ Political Currency - Ed Balls and George Osborne comparing notes
🎙️ The Rest Is Politics - Alastair Campbell and Rory Stewart finding unexpected common ground
🎙️ Simple Politics - winning the public vote by doing something quietly radical: explaining politics clearly

This isn’t noise. It’s trust being built over time, in depth, and at scale.

And people are listening. In significant numbers. Loyal numbers.
Not because anyone is shouting louder, but because they’re given space to think, explain and finish a sentence. It turns out audiences can handle more than a headline or a soundbite.

Meanwhile, across the public affairs and political communications world, we continue to:
📄 produce detailed reports
📊 develop data, consultations and briefings
📺 invest heavily in media and comms

All essential. All necessary.
Yet we still grapple with a familiar challenge: Where does influence really land?

The takeaway from the evening was simple but important:
We used to compete for column inches, now we compete for ear time.

Podcasts allow us to see engagement differently. Audiences form around voices they trust. Influence is cumulative, not transactional. And while sponsorship plays a role, loyalty follows credibility not the money.

A brilliant mix of politicians, journalists, campaigners, strategists and the politically curious. Excellent music. Excellent cocktails. And one Anthony Scaramucci joke that landed better than expected and is best left unquoted.

🎧 So the question now is: Which political podcast has your loyalty?

#PoliticalComms #PublicAffairs #Podcasting #Politics #Media Influence🚗⚡ The UK EV Transition Isn’t Just Happening It’s Already Here. But the real race is just beginning.

Last month, fully electric vehicles accounted for one-third of all new car registrations in the UK, hitting regulatory targets a full year early a watershed moment that signals demand is no longer the problem.
But here’s the twist:

➡️ Winning the EV adoption battle doesn’t guarantee industrial leadership.
➡️ Meeting policy targets doesn’t mean capturing economic value.
➡️ Selling EVs is one thing shaping the future value chain is another.

As noted in our latest insight, the UK now faces a strategic inflection point:
🔋 How do we own the battery value chain not just import it?
🔌 How do we integrate energy, transportation and capital markets to build durable advantage?
🚛 And how do we ensure fleets, infrastructure and industry aren’t left behind in this transition?

The electrification era isn’t coming it’s already here.

But the #EV era will be defined by the organisations that shift from compliance to competitiveness.

👉 If you’re curious about what comes next and why it will define who leads this is a must-read:

#ElectricVehicles #EV #AutomotiveIndustry #EnergyTransition Innovation IndustrialStrategy LeadershipTwo strong events, one clear takeaway: conversations matter.

Over the past couple of weeks, the team has had the opportunity to engage with senior policymakers including Deputy Prime Minister, David Lammy; Secretary of State for DHSC, Wes Streeting; Secretary of State for DCMS Lisa Nandy MP, Secretary of State for HCLSteve Reed; Secretary of State for Defence, John Healey; and Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Secretary of State for Defence, Shaun Davies.

Across both evenings, the focus was on policy direction, delivery, and the practical challenges ahead-thoughtful discussion, different perspectives, and a welcome dose of realism to start the year.

A strong start to 2026. ✨HMRC is about to spend billions on #technology.

That should make the market excited.
It should also make it uncomfortable.

This isn’t just another big pipeline or framework refresh. It’s corrective procurement at scale, an attempt to undo decades of dependency, fragmentation, and fragile delivery.

The real question isn’t whether HMRC can modernise its systems, it almost certainly can.

The question is whether government can finally buy independence instead of convenience, and whether the supplier market is willing to meet a buyer that is actively trying to change the rules of engagement.

We have written a critical piece on what HMRC’s next wave of tech #investment really means for #suppliers, #SMEs, and ultimately #citizens.
